5.MATTHEW SURNAMED
LEVI
MATTHEW THE APOSTLE, WHOM SOME CRITICS DISAGREE,
IS ATTRIBUTED AS THE AUTHOR OF THE FIRST OF THE FOUR GOSPELS IN THE NEW
TESTAMENT. MATTHEW WHO WAS ALSO KNOWN AS LEVI, AND WAS A TAX COLLECTOR
BY TRADE. AT THAT TIME, TAX COLLECTORS FOR ROME WERE BITTERLY DESPISED
BY THE JEWISH PEOPLE AND LABELED AS TRAITORS. JESUS MET MATTHEW AT A TAX
COLLECTORS OFFICE AND WITHOUT HESITATION, MATTHEW FOLLOWED JESUS WHEN THE
LORD ASKED HIM. MATTHEW WAS NOTED AS THE SON OF ALPHAEUS IN MARK 2:14,
JUST AS JAMES THE NINTH APOSTLE WAS IN MATT 10;3 AND MARK 3;18 AS WELL
AS LUKE 6;15. MATTHEW AND JAMES MAY HAVE BEEN BROTHERS AS WELL, OR THE
SON OF ALPHAEUS MAYBE A METAPHOR OR CONTAINS A SYMBOLIC MEANING.
ANOTHER EXPLANATION IS THAT IS WAS CUSTOMARY OF THE JEWS TO USE TWO NAMES
AS MATTHEW WAS ALSO KNOW AS LEVI. THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW IS THE ONLY ONE
TO MENTION THE WORD CHURCH. THE
DEATH OR FINAL DAYS OF MATTHEW IS
